Today’s crazy Bible verse comes from 2 Chronicles 13:17
“Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.”
Now, I like to study history, and I know a fair amount about ancient battles, wars, weapons and soldiers. And I have to say that a death toll of 500,000 men is RIDICULOUS! This number exceeds the death toll of any battle in World War II, and is much bigger than the battle of Gettysburg, which is the biggest battle in the Civil war, where the casualties of the defeated side (injured soldiers included) was only at about 28,000, and both sides together only had about 51,000 casualties. In fact, the ENTIRE Civil war had a death toll much lower than 500,000. Who could believe that so many people had died? There probably wasn’t even a country in Biblical times that could support such an army! At least not in Israel, I am not so sure about the Romans and the Chinese.
But then again, this is the book that claims that the Garden of Eden is still on earth, guarded by Angels with fiery swords, and the serpent that must still be crawling around ‘eating dust’. Come to think of it, the Bible must have mixed up snakes and worms!
